Navratri vehicle sales 2026: line graph of EV retail rising to 1,17,437 units, from FADA data

FADA has released its provisional data for Navratri 2026. In this post I put the Navratri vehicle sales numbers for 2026 next to 2025 and 2024, and then look at the EV numbers. I am showing the figures as FADA released them, without adding my own reading of them.

Question: How did Navratri vehicle sales in 2026 compare with last year, and how did EV sales do?

Short answer

Over the ten days of Navratri 2026, India’s vehicle retail was 11,23,086 units. FADA’s table shows this as 6.52% lower than Navratri 2025 and 26.76% higher than Navratri 2024. Against 2025, passenger vehicles were down 21.91%, while commercial vehicles and tractors were up by about 1%. EV retail was 1,17,437 units, up 26.78%, with all four EV categories higher. This is provisional data, and FADA’s own figures for earlier years have changed between releases (see the data notes below).

Where this post comes from: Almost everything here comes from FADA’s own press release on Navratri 2026, dated 21 October 2026, which is provisional. The 2025 and 2024 figures in the tables are the ones printed in that same release. I also read FADA’s October 2025 press release, which has last year’s Navratri numbers, and the two do not match. I explain this in the data notes below. All numbers and percentages are as printed by FADA, so I did not calculate any figures of my own.

What FADA’s Navratri vehicle sales data counts

FADA is the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations. It counts retail sales, which means vehicles actually registered by buyers, not vehicles sent from factories to dealers. If you want to know how to find this data every month, we have an earlier article on FADA vehicle retail data.

For Navratri, FADA counts from the first day of Navratri till Dussehra. The periods are:

The 2026 period is 11 October to 20 October 2026, which is ten days.

For 2025, FADA counts 22 September to 2 October 2025, which it says is eleven days.

Navratri 2024 runs from 3 October to 12 October 2024, which is ten days if you count the dates FADA lists (FADA does not print the number of days for 2024).

The 2026 data was collected as on 21 October 2026 from 1,468 of 1,469 RTOs (the regional transport offices where vehicles are registered). Also, FADA says data for three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and tractors is not available for Telangana.

Here is FADA’s table for all vehicles. 2W is two-wheelers, 3W is three-wheelers, CV is commercial vehicles, CE is wheeled construction equipment, PV is passenger vehicles and Trac is tractors.

Bar chart of change in vehicle retail by segment, Navratri 2026 versus Navratri 2025, from FADA data

Against Navratri 2025, only two categories grew: commercial vehicles and tractors, by 1.12% and 0.89%. Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and construction equipment were lower. But against Navratri 2024, every category except construction equipment was higher.

Passenger vehicles had the biggest fall against 2025, at 21.91%, from 2,34,004 to 1,82,728 units. But against 2024, the same category was up 10.39%.

What FADA says about Navratri vehicle sales in 2026

FADA’s President commented on the 6.52% dip against Navratri 2025. He said it is largely optical, because Navratri 2025 ran eleven days against ten this year and coincided with the GST 2.0 roll-out, which FADA says pulled a wave of pent-up demand into one window. He also said Navratri 2024 is the last truly comparable festive period, and that retail is up close to 27% over it.

FADA’s October 2025 release had described Navratri 2025 as the “Bachat Utsav”.

These are FADA’s statements. Also remember that the tables do not show the reasons behind the changes.

EV retail in Navratri 2026

This is the part with growth in every row. Here is FADA’s EV table.

Bar chart of EV retail growth by category, Navratri 2026 versus Navratri 2025, from FADA data

EV retail was 1,17,437 units in Navratri 2026, up 26.78% over Navratri 2025 and up 83.06% over Navratri 2024. All four EV categories in the table were higher than in both earlier years. Electric two-wheelers were the largest, at 75,758 units.

FADA also says EVs now account for close to 10.5% of festive sales, up from about 7.7% a year ago. FADA’s President described this as a sign that India’s EV shift “has become self-sustaining”. That is FADA’s view.

Data notes and disclaimer: comparing FADA’s releases across years

While putting this post together, I compared FADA’s Navratri 2026 release with its Navratri 2025 release. Here is what I found. These are issues with comparing the data, and I list them so you can judge the numbers for yourself.

Navratri vehicle sales: same period, different numbers

1. The same Navratri periods show different numbers in different FADA releases. FADA’s October 2025 release and its October 2026 release both show Navratri 2025 and Navratri 2024. The numbers are not the same:

CategoryNavratri 2025, in the 2025 releaseNavratri 2025, in the 2026 releaseNavratri 2024, in the 2025 releaseNavratri 2024, in the 2026 release

Trac21,60422,48918,20318,875
Total11,56,93512,01,4798,63,3278,85,998

FADA does not explain the change in these releases. The Navratri 2024 numbers here are the ones in FADA’s 2025 and 2026 releases. I could not find Navratri-window figures in FADA’s October 2024 release, which shows the full month of October 2024 only, so I could not compare 2024 with a first release.

2. Growth percentages are tied to the numbers in each release. In its 2025 release, FADA reported Navratri 2025 retail as up 34.01% over Navratri 2024. In this post, the growth percentages for 2026 are FADA’s own, as printed in the 2026 release. So I did not recalculate any of them using other releases.

Days and coverage in the Navratri vehicle sales data

3. The number of days differs. FADA says Navratri 2025 covers eleven days because of one additional day of Navratri. Navratri 2026 is ten days, and the dates FADA lists for Navratri 2024 also make ten days.

4. Coverage of RTOs and states differs. The 2026 data is from 1,468 of 1,469 RTOs, with no data for three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and tractors from Telangana. Also, the disclaimer in FADA’s 2025 release says its numbers do not include Telangana and were collected from 1,392 of 1,458 RTOs as on 4 October 2025.

What is provisional or missing

5. The 2025 EV figures come from one release only. The October 2025 release I read has no EV table for the Navratri period. The Navratri 2025 and Navratri 2024 EV numbers in this post are from the 2026 release, so I had no earlier version to compare them with.

6. The 2026 data is provisional. FADA collected it as on 21 October 2026. Because of point 1, the numbers may change in later releases.

7. Share of EVs. The 10.5% and 7.7% figures are as stated by FADA. Also, FADA did not state a share for Navratri 2024, so I did not show one.

This article is for information only and is not investment advice. Figures may change as FADA updates its data. Any mistake in summarising the data is mine.

Key takeaways

  • The total: Navratri 2026 retail was 11,23,086 units, down 6.52% from 2025 and up 26.76% from 2024, as shown in FADA’s table.
  • Who grew: Against 2025, only commercial vehicles (+1.12%) and tractors (+0.89%) grew. But two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and construction equipment were lower.
  • Passenger vehicles: They were down 21.91% against 2025 and up 10.39% against 2024. FADA says the dip in the total against 2025 is largely because last year had eleven days and the GST 2.0 roll-out.
  • EVs: EV retail was 1,17,437 units, up 26.78%, and all four EV categories were higher. FADA says EVs are close to 10.5% of festive sales, against about 7.7% a year ago.
  • Data notes: FADA’s figures for Navratri 2025 and 2024 are different in its 2025 and 2026 releases, and the 2026 data is provisional.
