Where this post comes from: This quick OPEC meeting update leans mainly on OPEC’s own press release of 4 October 2026, with Reuters and CNBC coverage for context.

OPEC meeting on 4 October 2026: what was decided

OPEC is the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. It has 11 member countries after the UAE left on 1 May 2026. “OPEC+” adds allied oil producers outside OPEC, such as Russia. Seven OPEC+ countries met online on 4 October 2026 to review the oil market: Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and Algeria, which are OPEC members, and Russia, Kazakhstan and Oman, which are allies outside OPEC.

The decision was simple: they will keep September 2026 required production unchanged for November 2026. They also repeated their promise to follow the agreed targets fully. Reuters reported that this was in line with expectations, and that further changes to output policy are unlikely until next year.

November oil production targets by country

Here are the required production levels for November 2026, in thousand barrels per day (kbd), from OPEC’s release.

CountryRequired production (kbd)
Saudi Arabia10,478
Russia9,949
Iraq4,431
Kuwait2,676
Kazakhstan1,628
Algeria1,007

Why this OPEC meeting changes little on the ground

A target is not the same as actual output. Data shows supply has been running below these targets. Reuters links this to continuing export disruptions from the US-Israeli war on Iran, with exports at 60% to 80% of normal levels in recent months.

The seven core members pumped 25 million barrels per day in August, up 630,000 from July, but that is still roughly 5 million below pre-war levels, according to OPEC data cited by Reuters. UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo told Reuters that the oil market remains tight.

What the OPEC meeting means for fuel prices and India

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, remains above $100 a barrel, up from about $73 before the Iran war began in late February. Prices dropped on Friday after Western governments agreed to release diesel and crude stocks, but they are still high.

India buys most of its oil from abroad, so high crude prices usually mean a bigger import bill and pressure on petrol, diesel and transport costs. That can feed into inflation, a theme I covered in my piece on the RBI’s possible October rate hike. Oil producers and refiners usually gain from high prices, while industries that use oil-based raw materials, such as paints, plastics, chemicals and airlines, usually pay more. This is general background, not a price forecast.

When is the next OPEC meeting?

The seven countries will keep meeting monthly, and the next OPEC meeting is on 1 November 2026. Reuters also said the Iran war has delayed the group’s output capacity review, which is needed to set members’ 2027 quotas. You can follow future decisions on the OPEC website, which carries press releases, and in the OPEC Bulletin.

Key takeaways

Frequently asked questions

What was decided at the OPEC meeting on 4 October 2026?

Seven OPEC+ countries agreed to keep November 2026 required production the same as September 2026 and repeated their commitment to follow the targets.

When is the next OPEC meeting?

The seven countries plan to meet again on 1 November 2026, and they hold these meetings monthly.

How many countries are in OPEC, and who is in the OPEC+ group of seven?

OPEC has 11 members after the UAE left on 1 May 2026. OPEC+ adds allied producers such as Russia. The seven that met are Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and Algeria (OPEC members), plus Russia, Kazakhstan and Oman (allies outside OPEC).

What does kbd mean in the OPEC production table?

kbd stands for thousand barrels per day, also written as kilo barrels per day. For example, Saudi Arabia’s November target of 10,478 kbd is about 10.5 million barrels a day.

Will the OPEC meeting make petrol and diesel cheaper?

Not directly. Production targets were left unchanged and Brent is still above $100 a barrel, so fuel prices are not likely to ease because of this decision alone. This is not a price forecast.

Where can I read OPEC press releases?

OPEC publishes press releases on its website and monthly reports in the OPEC Bulletin.
